Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about Get Wild — what it is, what it costs, how to set it up, and how to use it safely off the grid.

01The basics

What is Get Wild?

Get Wild lets you text an AI assistant from a Garmin inReach satellite communicator. Ask a question from anywhere — a trail, a summit, open water — and a wilderness-savvy AI answers over satellite. No cell service, no internet, and no app to install.

Can I use ChatGPT on a Garmin inReach?

Effectively, yes — that's what Get Wild does. ChatGPT itself doesn't run over satellite, but Get Wild brings a similar conversational AI to your inReach by routing your messages through the Iridium satellite network. You text Get Wild's address from your device; an AI assistant reads the message, looks up live information when needed, and texts a tailored reply back.

Are you Garmin? Are you affiliated with Garmin?

No. Get Wild is an independent service — we're not made by, endorsed by, or affiliated with Garmin Ltd. We work with Garmin inReach devices because they're the satellite communicators most people in the backcountry already carry. inReach® is a trademark of Garmin Ltd.

02Pricing

What does it cost?

It's free. Every account gets 50 messages per month at no charge, and no credit card is required. If you reach the limit, you'll get a reply telling you the date it resets.

How much does it cost per message?

Get Wild doesn't charge per message — the first 50 messages a month are free. The only per-message cost is whatever your Garmin inReach plan already charges to send and receive a satellite text, exactly the same as messaging a friend from your device.

03Devices & setup

Which devices work with it?

Any consumer Garmin inReach-enabled device that can send and receive text messages — for example the inReach Mini 2, inReach Messenger, and inReach Explorer+. You just need your normal Garmin inReach satellite plan; no Garmin Professional or Portal Connect account is required.

Does Get Wild work with the inReach Mini, Mini 2, Messenger, and Explorer+?

Yes. Get Wild works with every consumer Garmin inReach device that can send and receive text messages — including the inReach Mini, inReach Mini 2, inReach Messenger, Messenger Plus, and inReach Explorer+. There's nothing to install on the device — you just save Get Wild's address as a contact.

Do I need a Garmin subscription to use Get Wild?

You need your normal Garmin inReach satellite plan — the same one that lets you send messages from the device in the first place. Get Wild itself is free; we don't add any subscription fee on top of what you already pay Garmin.

How do I set it up?

04What you can ask

What can I ask it?

Get Wild can look up live information — tomorrow's weather, wildfire activity, trail and road closures — and it draws on deep wilderness know-how for gear repairs, route decisions, plant and animal ID, and trip planning. It also fields general questions on just about any topic. The more detail you give (and your inReach can attach your GPS location), the more useful the answer.

Can I get a weather forecast on my Garmin inReach?

Yes. Ask Get Wild something like "Will it rain tonight?" or "Forecast for tomorrow morning" and you'll get a short, location-aware reply over satellite. If your inReach attaches your GPS coordinates, the forecast is tailored to exactly where you are — no need to type a place name.

How is Get Wild different from Garmin Weather?

Garmin Weather delivers a fixed-format forecast for a per-request fee. Get Wild is conversational — you ask in plain English, follow up, and get answers across weather, wildfire activity, trail and road closures, gear questions, plant ID, and trip planning. It's not a Garmin product and isn't tied to a Garmin Weather subscription.

Can Get Wild check wildfire activity or trail closures?

Yes. Get Wild searches the live web for fire activity, smoke conditions, and trail or road closures relevant to your coordinates, and replies with what it finds. Conditions change fast — always confirm with the responsible land manager when it matters.

05Coverage & speed

Where does it work?

Anywhere your inReach has a clear view of the sky. Get Wild runs over the Iridium satellite network, which covers the entire globe — the same network your inReach already uses to send messages.

Does Get Wild work outside the US? Which countries?

Anywhere your Garmin inReach works. Iridium's satellite network covers the entire planet — every continent, every ocean — so there are no country restrictions on Get Wild itself. Replies come in English by default; you can ask in another language and it'll respond in kind.

How fast are replies?

Satellite messages are not instant. Expect roughly 30–90 seconds for a round trip. Replies are limited to about 160 characters per message; a longer answer is split into numbered parts, like (1/3), (2/3).

06Safety & data

Is it safe to rely on?

Get Wild is not for emergencies. In a life-threatening situation, use your inReach SOS button — it contacts professional search and rescue.

Get Wild is an information tool, not a rescue service. Its answers are generated by AI and can be wrong or incomplete — always apply your own judgment, especially for navigation, medical, and safety-critical decisions, and carry the maps, skills, and gear your trip requires.

What do you do with my data?

To answer a message we use your email, the message text, and the GPS coordinates your inReach attaches when available. That data is shared only with the services needed to run Get Wild — including Anthropic, which generates the AI reply. We don't sell your data or use it for advertising. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

07Account & contact

How do I sign in?

There's no password. Enter your email and we send a 6-digit code; enter the code and you're in.

How do I cancel or delete my account?

You can stop using Get Wild at any time. To permanently delete your account and all data associated with it, head to your account settings and use the Delete account option. The action is immediate and cannot be undone.

How do I share feedback?

Email hello@getwild.ai with bugs, questions, or things you'd like to see. As an open beta, every reply genuinely shapes what comes next.
